What the banks and corporates behind the latest digital eUCP presentations got right

The eUCP rules have existed since 2002. Now the deals do too. For two decades, letters of credit have had a rulebook for electronic presentation and almost no transactions to show for it. Documents still get printed, couriered, checked and couriered again, often after the goods have arrived.

That changed in the past 12 months. Yapı Kredi completed Türkiye's first fully digital LC presentation. Societe Generale closed one of the first fully digital LCs between the UK and France. Commerzbank completed a UK–Germany LC under eUCP, with every document moving digitally instead of by courier. Lloyds, a leader in digital trade, has been supporting them all.

Each deal used digital originals. It passed from exporter to banks to importer inside digital envelopes with all supporting docs, so there was nothing to print, scan or courier, and no closed platform to join.

In this edition of the Digital Trade Playbook, we hear from the people who did it. We'll cover what changed in their operations, what surprised them, and what has to happen next for e-presentation to become routine.

The panel

Every speaker on this panel has completed live digital LC transactions. This is a practitioner session, not theory. Moderated by Merisa Lee Gimpel, Digital Trade Works, host of the Digital Trade Playbook series.

Since 2010 she has focused on the digitalisation of Trade Finance, and she currently chairs an ICC working group on the practical application of eUCP and eURC. She has supported early pilot transactions involving digital trade document presentation, and since 2023 has led Guarantee Vault, Commerzbank's multi-guarantor platform.

He has worked across the full trade finance lifecycle, from export LC advising and document checking to global product strategy. In 2025, he helped lead Swedbank's first fully digital guarantee transactions in the Nordics and continues to drive the bank's push toward digital LC presentation.

He is active in regulatory advocacy on prudential treatment of Trade Finance, including under CRR3, and has co-authored several trade finance publications, including the practical guide Documentary Credits, Standby Letters of Credit, Sureties and Guarantees (Revue Banque Edition).
