The issuer/carrier of the document will remain in control of the document during the full lifetime of the CMR, being continuously updated with events and transfer of liability. The updates about events during the transport will be written to the document, that will in itself contain the full audit trail of the shipment as a paper equivalent.
trace:original documents stay immutable and machine readable by anyone that have access to the document and allows the issuer/carrier to collect data to their own transport management system. The document is completely stand-alone and does not depend on any specific software or rulebook. It is also a ledger in itself and it will contain a complete audit trail of relevant data and associated sequences of events, such as transfer of control of the goods.

CMRs still not fully updated to a digital world
CMRs are regulated by the CMR convention and in 2011 the e-CMR protocol was added, which paves the way for electronic CMRs. Since then, more that 30 countries have acceded the e-CMR protocol. But the adoption of digital solutions has been slow and most CMRs today are still paper-based.
Paper based processes and routines have serious drawbacks such as fraud risk, high costs, lead time to produce, manage and store as well as large environmental impacts. Meanwhile, existing e-CMR solutions on the market are based either on the concept of a central system or on a closed eco-system where users have to be onboarded and the CMR data have to be stored centrally.
