With trace:original eCMRs all data stays in a digital original document and the freight document is continuously being updated with relevant information and sign-offs.
The issuer/carrier of the document will remain in control of the document during the full lifetime of the eCMR, being continuously updated with events and transfer of liability. The updates about events during the transport will be written to the document, that will in itself contain the full audit trail of the shipment as a paper equivalent.
trace:original documents stay immutable and machine readable by anyone that have access to the document and allows the issuer/carrier to collect data to their own transport management system. The document is completely stand-alone and does not depend on any specific software or rulebook. It is also a ledger in itself and it will contain a complete audit trail of relevant data and associated sequences of events, such as transfer of control of the goods.

CMRs still not fully updated to a digital world
CMRs are regulated by the CMR convention and in 2011 the eCMR protocol was added, which paves the way for electronic CMRs. Since then, more that 30 countries have acceded the eCMR protocol. But the adoption of digital solutions has been slow and most CMRs today are still paper-based.
Paper based processes and routines have serious drawbacks such as fraud risk, high costs, lead time to produce, manage and store as well as large environmental impacts. Meanwhile, existing eCMR solutions on the market are based either on the concept of a central system or on a closed eco-system where users have to be onboarded and the CMR data have to be stored centrally.

However, each document also contains structured data in JSON format, that enables any system to parse the document, even without connecting to API:s. This enables an automated process that is both efficient and robust, while retaining the possibility for manual verification.
trace:original eCMRs can be freely sent in seconds, received, and managed by everyone in the trade process and it can be used within, between or outside of trade platforms. Only the issuer of the eCMR needs to be a customer of Enigio and after issuance it is free to use forever.
