Model Law on Electronic Transferable Records (MLETR) is a UN framework providing legal recognition to electronic transferable records, enabling their use in place of paper documents.
It establishes criteria for legal equivalence between electronic and paper documents in international trade. Also, it aims to harmonise laws across different jurisdictions and facilitate the adoption of digital trade documents.
The main benefits of MLETR:
- Gives electronic records the same legal validity as paper documents
- Allows secure digital transfers of ownership and rights
- Supports international trade, finance, and logistics by reducing paperwork
- Increases efficiency, security, and transparency in transactions
