Visby Hague Convention

Visby Hague Convention are international maritime rules (formally the Hague-Visby Rules) governing carrier liability for cargo damage during international sea transport. They establish standard liability terms, limitations, and obligations for ocean carriers and shippers. These rules define when carriers are liable for cargo damage and set compensation limits.

Key functions of the Visby Haag:

  • Limits carrier liability. Carriers are responsible for cargo damage only if negligence is proven (e.g., improper stowage, unseaworthy vessel).
  • Defines liability limits. There is a monetary cap on compensation per package or unit.
  • Requires proper cargo handling. Shippers must pack and label goods correctly.
  • Sets a time limit for claims. Cargo claims must be filed within one year of delivery or loss.
