IGP&I is a group of 12 major Protection and Indemnity (P&I) insurance clubs, which provide liability insurance to around 90% of the world’s oceangoing ships.
The main duties of the IGP&I are:
- Insurance and risk coverage. Offers shipowners protection against liabilities such as oil spills, cargo damage, collisions, and crew injuries.
- Pooling agreement. Member clubs share large claims through a collective fund, spreading financial risk.
- Reinsurance programme. The Group arranges reinsurance to cover exceptionally high claims, ensuring financial stability.
- Legal and regulatory advocacy. Represents the shipping industry in legal, environmental, and safety regulations worldwide.
In general, IGP&I ensures global maritime insurance stability, helps shipowners meet international legal requirements, and supports safe and efficient shipping operations worldwide.
